Bullies and Centipedes

Updated: Nov 29, 2023

Max was a quiet and studious boy who loved to spend his time reading books and playing video games. Max was also the proud owner of a collection of wooden swords that he had painted himself from the prestigious Level 1 Armory. He loved to pretend that he was a brave knight, defending his kingdom from fierce monsters. Unfortunately, Max was also the target of constant bullying at school. A group of older kids, named Jake, Jamie, and Emma, would taunt him, push him around, and call him names. Max felt alone and helpless, and he didn't know what to do. To make matters worse, they lived in his neighborhood! One day, everything changed. Max was walking home from the park when he heard screams coming from a nearby street. He ran over to see what was happening and saw a group of giant centipedes, each as long as a car, crawling out of the sewers and attacking the city. People were running for their lives, but Max didn't panic. He knew exactly what to do.

He raced home and retrieved his favorite wooden sword, the one he'd named Bone Cleaver. He threw open the door and charged forward, ready to fight with his wooden weapon. At first, Max was clumsy and afraid, but he quickly realized that he was stronger than he thought. He swung his sword with all his might, and to his surprise, the blow stunned one of the centipedes. The monster recoiled, and Max saw an opening. He charged forward slapped the creature's deadly mandibles skyward and plunged his sword into the creature's belly. It screeched and writhed, but eventually, it fell to the ground, dead. Max was filled with a odd thrill that flowed through his blood and caused him to shudder as if from a sudden chill. From that moment, the monsters were no match for him. He swung his swords with all his might, he was able to fend them off, but he was tiring quickly. Deep down, he knew he couldn't fight them alone. That's when he saw monsters of a different sort. Jake, Jamie, and Emma, cowering behind a nearby car. They looked terrified as tears streamed down their faces as a particularly massive centipede loomed over them. Max hesitated. Years of trauma caused him to pause for a moment, thinking this would be justice for their crimes. Max shook his head. What was he thinking? They may be dumb bullies, but they did not deserve to die. He released a battle cry that halted the centipede in its tracks. It wheeled on him and snapped at his head with its mandibles. Max barely caught the creature's jaws with Bone Cleaver. He said a silent prayer giving thanks for the wood sword's durability. He twisted the blade which released his weapon from the creature's maw which now dripped with venom. He spun his sword before the massive centipede could recover an delivered a bone crushing blow that split the monster's carapace open. Max breathed heavily and motioned for the cowering children to follow. The bullies hesitated only for a moment, stunned by Max's prowess with a sword. They found temporary refuge at Max's house. The screams of the city folk were suddenly cut short as they slammed the door behind them. The sounds of their panting now the loudest thing in the room. For a long moment no one spoke. "Thanks," Emma said between breaths. "Don't mention it," Max replied wiping a stream of centipede guts from his brow. Suddenly an idea struck him. Max straightened. "I need your help." The bullies exchanged glances a wary look in their eyes, but after a moment they each nodded. Max gave a toothy smile. "How do I use this thing!?" Jamie screamed as he ran from a centipede with his sword swinging uselessly through the air. Max sliced through a centipede and turned to survey the battlefield. "Think of it like a baseball bat!" he shouted back. At first, they were hesitant. They had never held swords like these before, and they were scared. But Max was patient. He showed them how to hold their weapons, how to swing it, and how to aim for the monsters' weak spots. Slowly but surely, they started to gain confidence. Together, Max and the others fought off the centipedes. They moved in sync, their wood weapons mowing down centipede after centipede. Max felt a sense of pride and belonging that he had never felt before. When the battle was over, Max and the bullies stood panting, covered in sweat, dirt and centipede goo. The city was in ruins, but the monsters were gone. Jake, Jamie, and Emma turned to Max and held out their wooden swords. "Thanks for saving us," Jake said. "We never would have made it without you." Max smiled and shook Jake's hand. "No problem," he said. "We make a pretty good team."

From that day on, they were friends. They trained together, practicing their swordsmanship and strategizing for the next battle. They still went to school, but now they had a new purpose. They were defenders of their city, and nothing could stop them.
